What does the name SPRe Bodywork stand for?
SPRe is the acronym for Somatic Pattern Recognition. Soma, is a word that expresses the concept of BodyMind as one or inseparable. Pattern is, by definition, something that repeats. Recognition refers to the process of bringing unconscious beliefs and physical patterns to conscious awareness. We do all this to facilitate more authenticity and to create the results we are striving for in this lifetime. Ex: career, marriage/partnerships, parent-child relations, health.
What is somatization?
Somatization is the development of physical symptoms in response to seemingly overwhelming feelings or thoughts. Our physical bodies react before our minds are able to recognize and respond to experiences and information.
How is this form of therapy different from others?
SPRe Bodywork is the application of the ground breaking scientific discovery by Dr. Candace Pert, author of The Body is The Subconscious Mind. SPReBodywork Practitioners incorporate depth psychology with structural bodywork to bring emotions, belief systems and physical tensions to conscious awareness. The result is that this awareness, the first step in any process, is decidedly faster by incorporating the two modalities. The process offers clarity for each client’s life goals and a more direct path to those goals.
Why am I still in pain if I know what my issues are and can talk about them?
Being able to name our ‘issues’ is important, however, naming alone does not always keep us from repeating thoughts, behaviors, tensions that are in the way of our success.
What are the benefits of body awareness?
Sensitivity to the information our body holds is a skill that can be developed and with continued practice, can be available to us at any given moment, in any situation. Access to this information is a valuable because our bodies just react and feel - for example, our digestive system doesn’t have the ability to decide whether or not it is ok that it is irritated - it just is. Our dreams bring awareness to what is truly ‘unconscious.’ Our bodies bring awareness of the activities of ‘subconscious’ which we have access to anytime- if we are willing to ‘feel’.
What do you mean by elliptical motion?
Elliptical motion is a gentle wave like movement that we use when the client is on the table fully clothed, to release the holding patterns in the joints and through the segments of body. This motion acts much like sonar waves moving through the body bumping up against areas of holding and tension. The movement slips below the nervous systems predetermined set point of unconscious tension and holding and resets the set point to allow for structural shifts, greater ease in movement and the release of old emotional stances.
What are some of the therapeutic principles you adhere to and why are they important?
Therapeutic principles protect the client and create the maximum degree of safety for the client. They also allow the relationship between practitioner and client to be the place to identify unsuccessful relational patterns and practice new options for relating.
What are structural principles and is structural change lasting?
The structural principles of the human body are not that different from those of a house. The house must have a relationship with gravity and movement, must be balanced and supported. Our bodies are also in constant relationship with gravity and need to move to be balanced and supportive. Like houses, there are many different shapes and sizes of bodies with as many different ways to be balanced and supported. The goal of SPRe Bodywork is to find, for each unique body, its best relationship to gravity and movement and its optimal means of support and balance.
Just like in building a home, or any structure, principles must be used to create a sound structure. The same laws or principles exist in building or restructuring your body. SPRe Bodywork facilitates a more balanced and internally supported physical organization and the goal is to become comfortable with your own dynamic balance as your life and you continue to evolve.
I know exercise/movement is a great stress release why isn’t it enough?
Exercise can be a great release and a way to shift your energy or mood. Endorphins are wonderful! Exercise just doesn’t offer relational skills. We may all have been in a situation where we have had a disagreement/argument with a child, spouse, business associate and found some relief (blown our charge) by exercise. SPRe Bodywork builds interpersonal skills to create new outcomes.
